EPCOT stands for Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. This was one of Walt’s original ideas and the intention was to be a real city where people lived, worked, and had fun. However, Walt passed away before the project began. Instead of being a city, it became a theme park made of two parts, Future World and World Showcase. Sadly, World Showcase is closing permanently because it’s culturally insensitive, but it will be replaced with something amazing.
Disney World has been in hot water with many guests recently. The biggest controversy was Disney removing Cinderella Castle, which we reported on here. Also, Disney requiring all guests to wear diapers wasn’t a well-received announcement. Now the newest announcement that World Showcase is closing has many people just upset, if not more. That is until they hear the new plans.
It’s The End Of The World Showcase As We Know It
World Showcase brings so much joy to so many people. Many people go to Disney World just to drink around the world at EPCOT. This is even more true with Disney removing the drinking age in their parks. However, World Showcase isn’t just for drinking. People also saw it as a place to learn about other cultures, try new foods, and sightseeing. However, in 2023, that is offensive, thus leading to the closure of World Showcase.
According to an internal source, every year, tens of guests complain about World Showcase being culturally insensitive and promoting cultural appropriation. In fact, we reached out to one of the people who filed a complaint. According to this white woman, “World Showcase is offensive to everyone. They mock different cultures and use them to make money. This should never have existed in the first place.”
This woman went on to say, “They also exclude so many other cultures. There is nothing inclusive about World Showcase and it’s great to see it finally close for good.” Apparently, Disney took these tens of complaints seriously because they are shutting down World Showcase entirely because of it and will build something new and arguably more exciting.
What is Replacing EPCOT World Showcase?
World Showcase is about 115 acres, which is actually larger than Magic Kingdom. However, it’s a weird shape with the lake in the middle. Well, with the closure of World Showcase, Disney will also be draining the lake. This allows them to maximize the space in the park. Essentially, Future World will be one half of the park and WESTCOT will be the other half where World Showcase is now.
WESTCOT was originally supposed to be the EPCOT of Disneyland. However, the project never happened. Well, the good news is WESTCOT will finally happen and it’s coming to EPCOT, which just makes sense. While it will have some similarities to World Showcase now, it will be done in far less “culturally insensitive” ways.
WESTCOT will have Spacestation Earth, which is a 300-foot sphere similar to Spaceship Earth, but way larger. While final plans aren’t yet released for WESTCOT, it will be similar to the original plans for the California park. We know there will be multiple themed lands, rides with a variety of thrill levels, and most importantly food and shopping. We will keep you updated with more details as they surface.
