The Muppet Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster retheme is officially canceled. The ride will stay themed to Aerosmith for the time being, but there’s more to this announcement.
Disney is canceling the retheme because of the lack of excitement and interest in the Muppet version of the ride. In fact, this is considered one of their greatest failures in terms of new ride announcements.
They surprisingly anticipated a lot of excitement over a Muppet roller coaster, however, it clearly missed the mark. It’s almost as big of a flop as Frozen replacing the Tower of Terror, which we reported on here.
Of course, this doesn’t mean that there isn’t potentially a retheme coming to the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster. Disney is adding voting stations at the exit of the ride, asking visitors what they want the ride to be rethemed to.
The options for this survey are: Aerosmith, Hannah Montana, Queen, High School Musical, Moana, or write in your own theme. Disney will use these survey results to make an informed decision on how to retheme the ride.
They are including Aerosmith in the survey to give them baseline data and to see if it outperforms other themes. However, people think this survey is flawed because it only gives them a few main choices that aren’t very good.
There is no set timeline on when Disney will make a decision on the new theme.
