Breaking news, Disney buys the WNBA for $150 billion. Their goal is to further grow one of the hottest sports in America and eventually become more popular than the NBA.
According to an official statement, “Interest in the WNBA is growing exponentially. There is a huge opportunity to grow the sport further and close the gender gap. By the end of 2035, the WNBA will be the most popular sport in America.”
Disney has some huge plans for a sport that is currently watched by tens of people. However, to their credit, that is a massive increase from the past five years. Of course, the WNBA can thank Caitlin Clark for this huge boost in popularity.
In order to make the WNBA more appealing, Disney is making some significant changes. First off, they are going to double the size of the rim. This will allow for fewer air balls and increase the number of points scored in games.
Second, they will partner with Lululemon as the official sponsor of the uniforms. The players will wear Lulu leggings and tops instead of typical basketball jerseys. Lastly, they will air more games on ABC and ESPN, which are both owned by Disney.
These changes are expected to create more interest in the WNBA. As expected, there are no critics of this because no one really cares. This is vastly different from Disney buying the NFL, which we reported on here.
