The Walt Disney Company is all about inclusivity. In fact, we reported here on Disney’s new movie Proud, which features Lizzo as the first obese Disney princess. They also are making Moana transgender, which is another way to be inclusive. Now, Disney World is going to be even more inclusive with the announcement that black people can get in free during Black History Month.
Free tickets at Disney World are hard to come by. However, at one point, Disney World was looking at making their tickets free if they became a non-profit, which we reported on here. They have done other unique things when it comes to ticket sales. For example, tickets for pets, which we reported on here. Now, Disney is offering free tickets to black people during black history month.
Black History Month at Disney World
In the past, Disney has not done much for Black History Month. In fact, many people wish Disney did more to celebrate the month. However, Disney is finally taking a step forward depending on who you ask. As you are probably aware, race relations in the United States continue to be rocky. Oftentimes a company will try to appease a group of people, but alienate another group, making this issue larger. This seems to be what is happening with Disney.
Blackhistorymonth.gov says the purpose of the month is “paying tribute to the generations of African Americans who struggled with adversity to achieve full citizenship in American society.” Disney wants to do their best to fulfill this mission as well in a way that they can. They are doing this by allowing all black people into Disney World for free.
According to official statements, “Disney is committed to helping strengthen the black community. This is our way of providing reparations for past injustices. We want all black people to know that they are welcomed at Disney and what better way to welcome them than with free tickets into our world-class theme parks.” While this seems like a great idea to many, it appears to be very divisive.
Free Disney Tickets for Black People
You might be wondering how black people can get free tickets to Disney World. According to an internal source, during February, you will take a rapid DNA test at the entrance of all Walt Disney World theme parks. This uses the same proprietary technology of their rapid drug test all guests have to take, which we reported on here. If the rapid DNA test shows you have African DNA, you will be admitted into Disney World without needing to purchase a ticket.
It’s worth noting that Disney will require all guests to take this test, regardless of appearance. This is to legally protect Cast Members from any potential charges of racism. The DNA test will provide an objective result rather than a Cast Member looking at someone and subjectively deciding if they are black or not. This is implemented for the Cast Member’s sake and to prevent any lawsuits.
However, as you might imagine not everyone is on board. In fact, many people claim this is a violation of law and that Disney cannot legally discriminate based on skin color. However, others see this as a great step towards progress by Disney. They think that Disney needs to take more steps in the direction of reparations like this including potentially a black-only line at Disney World.
