The initiatives for companies to do more environmental good continue to be on the rise. This is why paper straws are so popular. Everyone knows they are a pain to drink out of, but corporate America has bought in. Disney is taking environmental friendliness to another level by completely eliminating all plates and utensils from Disney World.

Plates and Utensils Eliminated at Disney World

Disney World is known for its food. In fact, many people visit Disney just for the eating experience. It’s because of this that Disney is releasing the no ride ticket option where you can visit Disney World just for the food. However, eating at Disney World has just become significantly more challenging with the ban on all plates and utensils, which we will dig into.

Now, at all Disney restaurants, food will be served directly on trays. Disney will no longer provide guests with paper plates or plastic utensils to eat their food. This of course is an effort by Disney to save the environment and reduce waste inside their parks. According to an internal source, 98% of paper plates and plastic utensils get thrown out. If Disney removes both the plates and utensils, they will save millions of pounds of trash each year.

As you might imagine, guests are not happy about this decision by Disney. Many don’t feel that food served directly on a plastic tray is very sanitary. However, Disney assures guests that the trays will probably be clean. The other issue is the difficulty of eating the food. A lot of food at Disney World is finger food, however, not all of it is. But as you might expect, Disney has a solution that will cost you.

Buying Reusable Utensils and Plates

If you now want to use plates and utensils at Disney World, it will cost you. Disney is rolling out a brand new model where guests can pay for plates and utensils. At any restaurant, Disney will sell guests reusable plastic plates and utensils. Each plate will cost $10, while a spoon, fork, and knife set will cost $7. Of course, if you buy the combo, you will get it at a discounted price of $15.

This new model comes with a ton of drawbacks. First, it’s now costing you extra just to eat like a normal human. Second, those who buy plates and utensils will need to carry them around with them all trip, otherwise, they will need to pay another $15 for a set. This is yet another annoyance and something to manage while inside the Disney World parks. Others are also asking if this truly solves a problem.

Is using reusable plastic plates and utensils really better for the environment than what Disney currently does? Many people are speculating that it isn’t. In fact, a lot of people are accusing Disney of doing this strictly to make money. They are withholding basic dining materials in order to charge you. It certainly raises an ethical concern, much like charging for Wi-Fi inside their theme parks.
