The Five Keys are the first things Cast Members learn about when working for Disney. The first four keys are Safety, Courtesy, Show, and Efficiency. However, in 2021, Disney added a fifth key, inclusion. According to Josh D’Amaro, “It’s important to me to share how we’re creating a place where everyone is welcome and taking action to create meaningful change.” As part of this initiative, Disney is making their Cast Members’ nametags more inclusive.

Becoming more inclusive isn’t new at Disney World. For example, we reported here on Disney requiring all guests to wear pronoun pins. That was extremely controversial. In another controversial moment, Disney announced that men can now be princesses in their parks. There’s been a big shift towards becoming more “inclusive” by Disney and updating Cast Member nametags in the next step.

Inclusive Cast Member Nametags

Disney continues to roll out the barrel when it comes to being more inclusive. This time it’s by adding more information to their cast member nametags. Moving forward, all Disney Cast Member nametags will display their name, hometown, pronouns, astrological sign, religion, and blood type. Prior to now, the nametags at Disney World only displayed the Cast Member’s name and hometown or college. The addition of pronouns, astrological sign, religion, and blood type are to be more inclusive to all cast members.

The reason Disney is including pronouns is obvious. It’s the same reason they are requiring guests to wear pronoun pins, to prevent misgendering. As we all know, misgendering someone is one of the worst crimes you can commit. The astrological sign is also being added because of how culturally relevant that is. Astrological signs are important to many people. Religion is more controversial. However, Disney wants their employees to be able to proudly represent their religion. Of course, Cast Members will be allowed to put non-religious and atheist on their nametags if they identify as one of those.

Arguably the most controversial addition to the Cast Member nametags is blood type. That’s right, Cast Member nametags will now list their blood type. Many people feel this is personal information and a violation of their privacy. However, according to an official spokesperson, providing this information is a great way to be more inclusive. It’s also a great conversation starter between guests and Cast Members.

Cast Member Nametag Controversy

Apparently adding pronouns, astrological signs, religion, and blood type to cast member nametags is seen as controversial. Who would have guessed? As you might imagine, people fall on both sides of the discussion, supporting it as well as rejecting the entire idea behind it. Here is what different sides have to say.

Many people are against this entirely. They say that information like astrological signs, religion, and blood type has no reason to be on a nametag. That information is personal and irrelevant to other people, employees, and guests. They also note that putting pronouns on their nametag is just virtue signaling by Disney. In fact, many people mentioned they don’t want to put their pronouns on their nametag and see no need for it in the first place.

On the other hand, some people are all for this. When it comes to pronouns, they think that everyone should have to display them. This not only prevents accidental misgendering but is also more inclusive for those who are afraid to share their pronouns. They say it’s “being a good ally”. They also feel like sharing the astrological sign, religion, and blood type are all important bits of information and are good for other people to know and recognize.
