Disney World is known for being open every day of the year. In fact, prior to COVID-19, Disney World had only a few days where it was closed in its more than 50 years of operation. These were typically due to hurricanes. However, in breaking Disney news, Disney World will now close on all Mondays.

Disney continues to lose when it comes to guest experience. Requiring all guests to wear diapers was a bad start. We also reported here on Disney eliminating their Disability Access Service due to abuse. Of course, this hurts the people who need it most. Disney is taking another loss with the breaking announcement that they will be closed on all Mondays moving forward.
Disney World Closing on Mondays
Recently, there has been a shift for corporations to focus on social good over making a profit. These massive companies want to be seen as doing good in the world, even if it comes at a cost to their shareholders. That’s exactly what Disney World is doing by closing on all Mondays. This decision is chalked up to none other than climate change.

We recently reported here that Disney is planning to remove all monorails and replace them with walkways. This was to be more environmentally friendly. However, that isn’t going to solve climate change alone. So now Disney is taking another step in that direction by closing on Mondays. The logic behind this decision is if Disney can cease operations on Monday they will be able to significantly reduce their carbon emissions.
Essentially, Disney World is open 7 days a week, 356 days a year. If they close one day a week, over a full year, that is 52 days they are closed. Closing that many days allows them to reduce their carbon emissions by nearly 14% each year. When you look at how much they pollute the world in one year, a 14% reduction is massive. This is a really good look for the company but comes at a cost.
Issues of Closing Disney World on Mondays
Disney now closing on every Monday has some issues. Many guests are very upset about this. For people who take a vacation to Disney World, they expect it to be open. By being closed one day a week, they miss out on a chance to go to the parks. This is a very negative experience for those who travel there. Also, this will cause the parks to be busier the other days of the week because of pent-up demand for those who can’t go to the parks on Mondays. As we know, the parks are already overcrowded as is.

The other issue ties back to the shareholders. Those who invest in Disney are expecting their theme parks to operate at full capacity. This will impact Disney’s financials and have downstream effects on those who invest in the company. While Disney may be willing to sacrifice profit for social good, their investors do not like this decision one bit.
Of course, some people are in full support of this decision. They see this as a great initiative by Disney to help save the planet. On top of that, working conditions for Cast Members are harsh. This is a good way to give everyone a guaranteed day off, much like Chick-fil-A does on Sundays. This along with tip jars being added to Disney World rides makes the job of a Cast Member more appealing.
